Karma Days: On a mission for Sinterklaas

We are inspired by the power of positivity and kindness. That's why we have introduced "Karma Days," an initiative that promotes giving back to society and the planet. Discover how we bring this concept to life at Rituals.

What is Karma?

Karma is the positive or negative effects that result from previous actions, as per the Hindu belief. Doing good deeds not only makes others happy but also brings positivity to our own lives. You might have heard the saying, "What goes around comes around" or "Do good, and good will come to you."

“Karma Days” at Rituals

At Rituals, we want to inspire our colleagues to spread kindness and embrace the concept of Karma. We encourage them to perform small acts of kindness in their daily work lives, such as giving a hand massage to a customer, complimenting a colleague, or spreading positivity to a stranger. We also organise "Karma Days," which allow our office colleagues to dedicate one day each year to giving back to society and the planet.

Our Global HR Director Rolien Hoogers explains Karma Days as an integral part of living and breathing our Rituals vision and purpose: “Like our founder Raymond says: ‘We are not here to sell beauty, we are here to make people feel good.’ -Rituals is all about creating meaningful moments and giving back to society and planet. This is who we are. Giving back to others is self-evident for us – especially to those for whom it is maybe not that normal or a given. It fills us with joy and gratitude. And at the same time, we are also giving back to our own teams by spending quality time with each other in a different setting and creating new, unforgettable memories together. It connects us even more.”

Global HR Team

Sinterklaas is a figure in Dutch and Belgian culture who delivers gifts to children during winter holidays. Unfortunately, not every child can enjoy this tradition, as one in ten children growing up in poverty does not receive a gift from Sinterklaas. As a socially responsible business, we believe that no child should be excluded from this celebration. Therefore, our HR colleagues teamed up with volunteer organisation Sintvoorieder1 to put together Sinterklaas gifts for vulnerable children for the festive season 2024. 50 of our colleagues helped sort and wrap gifts, all with the goal of putting smiles on the faces of children in poverty and their parents.

While we cannot show you yet the happy faces of the kids and parents, we can for sure say that our HR colleagues were all smiles during their Karma Day.

“Participating in this Karma Day was such an enriching experience. It is so special because it goes beyond traditional employee benefits. The Karma Day allows me to make a personal impact through volunteering. This day left me with a grateful feeling for what I have in my life and being proud to be part of an organization that values its social responsibility.” Charlotte Dannijs, Program Specialist Culture & Leadership, reflects on the day.

Mariëlle De Loo, HR Business Partner, adds to this: “It might sound like something ordinary, however it is way more than just a meaningful way to bond as colleagues for a good cause. By such a small gesture, a little act of kindness of by volunteering, you create a ripple effect for others and yourself. While wrapping the gifts, we shared childhood memories with each other, we sang songs and much more. At the end of the day, you leave fulfilled with knowing that little things can have a massive meaning.”

“The participation in such Karma Days connects us as colleagues and instills us with a healthy dose of humbleness. I am proud to say that we do not only run the extra-mile for our professional line of work, but even more so when it comes to working together for a good cause. The dedication and care of the team was unbelievable and we went above and beyond with the results of 600+ wrapped gifts.” Frederik van Zeggeren, Talent Acquisition Specialist, mentions.
